All Chrome Ford Mustang: Cosmichrome Spectra Chrome
Have you guys seen these all chrome cars? They look pretty cool, this picture I posted down below is of an all chrome Ford Mustang. Now it's definitely not the most affordable mod to do, but maybe it might be one day. This isn't the same chrome stuff used on your rims. You know tripe plated chrome: they take your rim dip it in copper, then in nickel, then the final touch is chrome. No, this is a new type of spray on chrome.
One spray on chrome I heard about is Cosmichrome. It's a three step proces, they first spray on a basecoat made of catalyzed paint that creates a smooth surface. Then they spray on an electroless plating process that creates a brilliant mirror like reflective coating on primer. Last step is a protective topcoat, this seals the last two coats. More topcoats can be applied further protect your chrome paint.
Cosmichrome sounds great, but I haven't heard super great things about it yet. So far I've heard negative comments, a lot of people on forums say the the paint probably doesn't last and it eventually peels and pits. They did have a booth at the SEMA show one year, looked promising but nothing came of it. I've been looking for positive reviews on forums, still nothing. I guess if the stuff worked really well, it would be publically known.
Although, I did find this sweet picture of an all chrome Cosmichrome Ford hot rod. It sure looks amazing, but I couldn't find any high def pictures of the hot rod up-close. Plus, you Cosmichrome used their best painters on the project. Just because the hot rod looked perfect, doesn't mean your custom muscle car will look just as good.
Still though, I would like to hear more about Cosmichrome and spray on chromes. This could be the wave of the future, especially if they get the formula down pact and it can withstand big corrosion tests. Then they can do away with all chrome plating systems, I really hate chrome because it ends up pitting and not lasting at all. Every chrome rim I ever bought ended up pitting and I took care of it really well too. Last year I had my set of CCW wheels plated at California chrome, inside the barrel and all. Within a few months the barrel started pitting, I called California Chrome to complain and have my wheels stripped, they would not do it. And they still were under warranty, but that's a another story all together. I'll definitely get that later in my muscle car blog.
Another spray on chrome company to look at is Spectra Chrome. It looks magnificent in the picture, but when I looked up reviews on the company I didn't hear good things. Some muscle car enthusiasts who bought the paint solution said it wouldn't stick to the material they spray it on, whether its metal or plastic. It's really sad these companies come out with these chrome sprays and they don't work properly.
For now we'll just have to stick with a regular paint job on our muscle car. Some great paints that might have a similar look to Cosmichrome and Spectra Chrome is mystic paint. It changes colors and has a big glow to it. I hope this article helps if you're looking for a spray on paint.

I run a small shop in Colorado specializing in spray on chrome. There are a lot of inaccurate and misleading comments being made about these systems. I have spent a year of my life and thousands of dollars I couldn’t afford getting this process dialed in. There is a huge difference in the chemistry of the different companies. I started using SpectraChrome and didn’t produce one piece I would be comfortable charging a customer for. I then found Cosmichrome. This system DOES work. I spray it everyday and have many happy and repeat customers. I do regular work for artists and accessory businesses, and have several car and motorcycle restoration and custom jobs in the shop right now.
Not everyone with this equipment, regardless of the supplier, is going to do good work. It takes time and money to learn. The results and versatility of the applications are astounding. I just started on a 52 Willys that will be entirely chrome finished with Cosmichrome.
There is a lot of negative propaganda out there, which is unfortunate. It only hurts the industry. This system works.
Before you listen to second or third hand information through the rumor mill, check it out for yourselves. And don’t rely on the propaganda of the manufacturers. Talk to the guys who use the products. Our livelihoods depend on the quality of the products we use.
